We work with a diverse range of PR agencies – from boutique B2B tech agencies with under 10 employees, to consumer brand consultancies with 100+ staff. Naturally, company structure, working culture, team environment and breadth of work is different from agency to agency. However, one thing which generally (but not always) stays pretty similar across the board, are employee benefits.
There are of course the core benefits that all UK employers are legally required to provide – pension scheme, income protection and holiday allowance. But then you have the additional benefits, the ‘perks’ offered alongside your basic salary, designed to help promote employee satisfaction and wellbeing. Below are some of the most commonly seen benefits offered by our clients within the PR industry.
68% of our clients we asked at our last salary survey (March 2019) reported offering private healthcare to their employees. Often this is available from completion of your probation period, and plans vary depending on the insurance provider.
Cycle to Work Scheme
A brilliant perk, the government’s Cycle To Work Scheme was introduced back in 1999 as a way to help reduce environmental pollution and encourage healthier lifestyles. The scheme lets you buy a bike and equipment, tax-free, paying it back through your employer in monthly instalments over the year. 58% of our clients offer a cycle to work scheme!
Season Ticket Loan
A slightly less ‘green’ option compared to the cycle scheme, but a welcome benefit to many UK employees, particularly those working in London where trains & tubes are often a necessary part of the daily commute. With rising rail fares (and increasingly disrupted services, but we won’t mention those…) the option to repay your annual season ticket in monthly instalments can be extremely helpful.
New Business Incentive
Usually offered to all employees at all levels within the agency, a new business bonus or incentive is often given as a % of the client retainer, paid quarterly or yearly. A great way to get everyone involved in new business and so employees can reap the rewards of their hard work!
From Summer parties, Christmas parties, team building days, weekends away, lunches & pub nights… We think it’s safe to say that the PR industry is a firm believer in having fun outside of work. We’ve had clients take their teams on long weekends away to Marbella and Rome, go wine tasting, take a speed boat down the Thames, become regulars at the local pub quiz and enjoy evenings out on the town! Opportunities to socialise with your team is so important. And from an employer’s perspective, treating your team to a few nights out is a great way to thank them for their hard work and boost morale.
A rarer offering, but a very appealing one… In our experience, sabbaticals are often offered after 5+ years of continuous service and range from 1-6 months paid leave. Definitely a great way to repay employees for their commitment to the business.
There are a whole host of other benefits and perks which are regularly spotted on our clients benefit docs and job specs. From ‘personal days’ to undertake projects or charity work and early finishes throughout the summer months, as well as flexible working and wellbeing funds. Some of the others include subsidised or free gym memberships, childcare vouchers, life assurance, mobile phone contributions, training & development programmes and corporate discounts.
